PLEXIGLAS® Soundstop Transparent Acoustic Barrier

PLEXIGLAS® Soundstop is a specially developed acrylic sheet for transparent noise and wind protection barriers. Unlike concrete, timber or metal noise walls, it provides acoustic protection without completely blocking views or daylight. This makes it ideal where councils, transport authorities, developers or homeowners want noise reduction while keeping a visually open environment.

The material is commonly used along highways, rail corridors, bridges, overpasses, train stations, traffic routes, commercial sites and residential boundaries. PLEXIGLAS® Europe describes Soundstop as a transparent sheet system for noise and wind protection along traffic routes, enclosures, rail lines, train stations and bridges. It also states that the sheets offer high transparency, strong airborne sound insulation, weather resistance and long-term clarity.

In Australia, Plastral notes that PLEXIGLAS® Soundstop is regularly specified for highways, bridges, overpasses and large government transport infrastructure projects. Plastral also states the product is approved to RMS R271 requirements and is used for national sound barrier projects.

PLEXIGLAS® Soundstop GS

Cast acrylic sheet for transparent acoustic barrier applications. Suitable where high optical clarity, outdoor durability and sound reduction are required.

PLEXIGLAS® Soundstop GS CC

Cast acrylic sheet with embedded polyamide threads. The threads help hold fragments together if the panel is broken, making this grade suitable for bridges and overpasses where falling fragments must be prevented. PLEXIGLAS® Europe states that GS CC is approved worldwide for transparent noise protection walls on bridges without additional nets.

PLEXIGLAS® Soundstop XT

Extruded transparent acrylic sheet for large-format noise-barrier panels. Suitable for road, rail and general transparent noise-barrier projects.

PLEXIGLAS® Soundstop XT BirdGuard

Transparent acrylic noise-barrier sheet with integrated bird-protection stripes. The BirdGuard grade has 2 mm wide black or white strips spaced 30 mm apart, which birds perceive as an obstacle. The stripes are embedded inside the material, so they cannot be washed away by cleaning agents or graffiti removers.

Colours, Tints & Bird-Strip Options

PLEXIGLAS® Soundstop is available in clear transparent finishes and a range of coloured transparent tint options. PLEXIGLAS® Europe lists colour options including Citrine, Topaz, Ruby, Amethyst, Sapphire, Steel Blue, Sky Blue, Midnight Blue, Spring Green and Forest Green, with further functional and surface properties available on request.

Bird-protection markings can be achieved using factory-integrated BirdGuard stripes, brushed stripe effects, screen-printed markings, dots, symbols or bird-symbol patterns. The PLEXIGLAS® Soundstop brochure notes that brushed stripes and screen-printed markings offer long-term durability.

Important Bird-Protection Note: For permanent infrastructure work, factory-integrated or supplier-approved bird markings are recommended over uncontrolled on-site sanding or sandblasting, because incorrect surface treatment may affect appearance, cleaning performance, optical clarity or warranty conditions.

Warranty

PLEXIGLAS® Soundstop comes with a 30-year non-yellowing guarantee on applicable grades. Both Plastral and PLEXIGLAS® Europe reference the 30-year non-yellowing and long-term UV durability guarantee.

Final warranty terms should be confirmed against the supplied manufacturer guarantee document, project specification, installation method, cleaning method and approved use conditions.

Samples

Samples are available on request for colour, tint, BirdGuard stripe, thickness and project suitability review. PLEXIGLAS® Europe provides an order-samples option, and the POLYVANTIS online shop references samples or prototypes for project customers.

Relevant Acoustic & Safety Standards

For European and international projects, PLEXIGLAS® Soundstop XT BirdGuard is stated to be in the highest airborne sound reduction category B3 under EN 1793-2, EN 1793-6 and EN 16272-3-2, and it also meets requirements of EN 1794-1, EN 1794-2 and EN 1794-3.

The PLEXIGLAS® Soundstop brochure also states that weighted sound reduction can reach up to 33 dB under EN 1793-2 and 34 dB under EN 1793-6, depending on product grade, thickness and test method.

Australian Project Compliance References

For Australian infrastructure projects, the exact approval pathway depends on the project owner and state authority.

NSW / TfNSW / Former RMS

Plastral states that PLEXIGLAS® Soundstop is RMS R271 approved and regularly specified for highways, bridges, overpasses and government transport infrastructure projects.

Queensland TMR MRTS15 Noise Fences

Queensland’s MRTS15 specification covers the design and construction of noise fences. For transparent panels, MRTS15 states that transparent panels may be toughened laminated safety glass or thermoplastic safety panels, including acrylic or polycarbonate. It also requires transparent safety panels to be registered products and identifies bird-collision prevention as a requirement in relevant locations.

Western Australia Main Roads Specification 904

Main Roads WA Specification 904 covers the supply and construction of noise walls. For WA road projects, compliance should be checked against the current project-specific version of Specification 904 and confirmed by the project engineer or authority representative.

Performance documentation may be required for transparent noise-barrier applications. Depending on the project location, panels may be specified to meet relevant road, rail, bridge, acoustic, wind-load and safety requirements.

Important Compliance Note: For Australian infrastructure projects, compliance should be confirmed against the relevant state authority specification, such as TfNSW / RMS R271, Queensland TMR MRTS15 or Main Roads WA Specification 904.
